The best known characteristic of aluminium is that it is a lightweight and easy to manoeuvre material. However, aluminium also has a very high resistance to corrosion because of a thin transparent oxide skin which forms on all surfaces exposed to the atmosphere and protects the metal from further oxidation. Unless the product comes into contact with some substance or event that destroys this protective oxide coating, the metal remains protected against corrosion.

Aluminium can safely be used in the presence of many mild alkalis with the aid of inhibitors, but general direct contact with alkaline substances should be avoided as these attack the oxide skin and are therefore corrosive to aluminium.

Typical applications of aluminium include chemical processing plants, mine sites, dock/wharf upgrades, or other areas where there are strong corrosive elements present in the environment.
