Aluminium’s best-known characteristic is its light weight. However, aluminium also has a high resistance to corrosion because of a thin transparent oxide skin which forms on all surfaces exposed to the atmosphere and protects the metal from further oxidation. Unless exposed to some substance or condition that destroys this protective oxide coating, the metal remains protected against corrosion. This metal can safely be used in the presence of many mild alkalis with the aid of inhibitors, but general direct contact with alkaline substances should be avoided as these attack the oxide skin and are therefore corrosive to aluminium.

Some typical applications for aluminium products are chemical processing plants, mine sites and wharf upgrades.
